About Rotational Molding Technology

Rotational molding provides enormous opportunities in product development and manufacturing, with the ability to modify finished products. This unique process allows creating hollow products of virtually any shape, purpose and size.

Rotational molding (or rotomolding) is an innovative plastic processing method that opens up broad possibilities for manufacturing large hollow products with complex geometry. Unlike other polymer processing methods, rotational molding doesn't require high pressure, allowing products to be made with uniform wall thickness, without internal stresses and deformations.

The process works as follows: powdered or liquid polymer material is loaded into a mold, which then rotates simultaneously in two planes (biaxial rotation) and is heated. Under the influence of gravity and temperature, the material is evenly distributed along the inner surface of the mold, forming a uniform wall of the future product. After cooling, the mold opens, and the product is easily removed due to the absence of undercuts and complex parting line geometry.

The rotational molding cycle is long (0.5...1 hour), due to the need for complete heating and cooling of large polymer mass. That's why rotational molding is most effectively used for small and medium-series production, where the technology's advantages fully compensate for cycle duration. For mass production of small products, other methods like injection molding are more appropriate.

What can be manufactured?

The range of products that can be created by rotational molding is impressive in its diversity. These can be flow distributors, tanks for storing and transporting liquids and dry substances (from small tanks to multi-ton containers), pontoons for docks and floating structures, furniture (modern designer chairs, tables, shelves), road signs, traffic cones and poles that withstand significant mechanical loads and adverse weather conditions.

The technology is also widely used for manufacturing planters of various shapes and sizes, pet houses, large toys (swings, play structures), waste bins and containers, doll parts, balls for various purposes, helmets and protective equipment, rowing boats (canoes, kayaks) that provide excellent buoyancy and durability.

The method is ideal for creating shelters, underground storage cellars, mannequins for car crash tests and many other products. Multi-layer products, which can be created through sequential application of different materials, additionally gain increased strength, rigidity, thermal insulation properties and lightness due to the use of foamed materials in middle layers.

Significant Advantages of Rotational Molding

Low Mold Cost

Rotational molding molds have significantly lower cost compared to injection molding tools, as they don't need to withstand high pressure. This reduces the entry barrier for new product manufacturing by 5-10 times.

Fast Mold Manufacturing

Relatively short mold manufacturing time (2 to 8 weeks depending on complexity) allows quick product delivery and market entry, ahead of competitors. Possibility to use various materials for mold manufacturing (aluminum, steel, composites).

Easy Color Change

Ability to easily change product color without additional painting or coating. Color is incorporated directly into the polymer material, ensuring resistance to fading, scratches and wear. Possibility to create multi-colored products by using different materials in different zones.

Wall Thickness Flexibility

Easy change of product wall thickness by simply increasing or decreasing the amount of loaded material without need to modify the mold. This allows optimizing strength-to-price ratio for specific customer requirements and operating conditions.

Additional Technology Benefits

  • No internal stresses in the product
  • Uniform wall thickness across entire surface
  • Ability to create very large products
  • No seams and joints
  • Possibility of metal insert installation
  • Minimal production waste

Our Rotomolding Machines

We offer 4 rotomolding machines of rock and roll and shuttle types, we'll select a machine of optimal size with low production cost for polyethylene or plastisol products.

We use electric heating, which with rising gas prices has allowed us to maintain competitive production costs. Electric heating also provides more precise temperature control, improving product quality and reducing defects.

Rock and Roll and Shuttle

"Rock and Roll" Type Machines

Compact and Economical Solution

"Rock and roll" machines got their name from the characteristic movement resembling dance moves. The mold rotates around one axis while rocking around another.

  • Compact equipment size
  • Lower cost compared to shuttle machines
  • Perfect for small business and startups
  • Simple maintenance and operation

"Shuttle" Type Machines

High Productivity and Efficiency

Shuttle machines have separate heating and cooling zones, which significantly increases productivity. The mold moves between zones on a rail system.

  • High production productivity
  • Ability to work with multiple molds simultaneously
  • Energy efficiency through separate zones
  • Optimal for medium-series production

Supported Materials

Polyethylene (PE)

Most popular material for rotational molding. Excellent resistance to impacts, chemicals, UV radiation.

  • Water tanks
  • Kayaks and boats
  • Waste containers
  • Outdoor furniture

Plastisol (PVC)

Liquid PVC-based material. Ideal for creating soft, elastic products with high detail.

  • Doll parts and toys
  • Balls and sports equipment
  • Crash test dummies
